Published in 2014, IN ITINERE explores contemporary art as a field in continuous transformation. Starting from sociology — and particularly from Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the artistic field — the book examines how the art system has changed through globalisation, multiculturalism, new forms of artistic production, the changing role of museums and the renewed presence of private patronage.

More than a fixed analysis of the art world, IN ITINERE is a journey through its transformations. Sociology and contemporary art continually intersect, bringing theoretical reflection into dialogue with artists, works and the changing cultural contexts in which they operate.

The volume includes Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Theorem of Trinamics, in which the artist reflects on the relationship between opposites, creation, freedom and responsibility, and develops ideas connected to the Third Paradise and the possibility of a new balance between nature and artifice.

The book concludes its journey with a conversation with Wang Qingsong, extending its perspective towards China and towards an art world whose geography was already being radically redefined.
