We Rise by Lifting Others was conceived for Masseria Torre Maizza as an encounter between contemporary art, landscape and community.
At the heart of the project is Marinella Senatore’s idea of art as a space for participation, collective energy and transformation. Her work enters into dialogue with the Masseria and the landscape of Puglia, moving beyond the idea of the artwork as an isolated object to become a catalyst for relationships, encounters and shared experiences.
The project developed through different moments and forms, bringing together installation, public participation and conversation. Rather than simply placing contemporary art within an unexpected context, the intention was to allow the work, the place and the people inhabiting it to transform one another.
The title itself becomes a statement of intent: we rise by lifting others. A simple proposition that places reciprocity, responsibility and the possibility of growing through others at the centre of the project.

Masseria Torre Maizza is not a neutral setting
It carries within it the history of Puglia and its deep relationship with light, hospitality, ritual, craftsmanship, and landscape. Marinella’s work resonates profoundly with these dimensions because her practice has always been rooted in community, participation, and collective memory. In Puglia — and particularly within the tradition of luminarie — light is never merely decorative. It is a social presence that marks moments of gathering, celebration, and belonging.

For me, dialogue does not simply accompany a curatorial project — it is an integral part of it. Many decisive ideas emerge through conversations, encounters, and unexpected exchanges with artists, collaborators, audiences, or even with places themselves.
