Published in 2010, Modernità e campo dell’arte marked the beginning of my research into the relationships between contemporary art, society and power. Drawing particularly on Pierre Bourdieu’s critical sociology, the book examines the art world as a field shaped by institutions, forms of legitimation, economic forces and symbolic struggles, before turning its attention to the transformations of the contemporary Italian art system.
The book also opened an unexpected new chapter. It led to my encounter with publisher Carmine Mario Muliere and, shortly after, to a long collaboration with EQUIPèCO. From 2010 to 2017, Modernità e campo dell’arte became the title of my regular column for the magazine, extending the research begun with the book into an ongoing observation of contemporary art.
